Ravenna Day 2

Passing thru Ravenna's rather unremarkable main Piazza, we arrived at Dante's tomb.
No need to explain who he was other than the final years of his life were spent here in Ravenna.

A short distance away is the Church of San Francesco. Begun in 460 AD and rebuilt in the 11th c, it too has sunk several meters under ground.

As seen here where part of the church is underwater. The floor mosaics are from the original construction, dutifully guarded over by coy fish.

Since arriving, we've been seeing these posters all round town. It's an art exhibit we thought we'd check out. Here are a few of the highlights:Moving on to the Museo Arcivescovile, the building is part of the original Archbishop's palace, which is as old as Ravenna. Inside there are some interesting finds. The first is the 6th c ivory thrown of Bishop Maximian.
Doesnt look very comfortable, does it? The biggest surprise is a small chapel called Oratorio di Sant'Andrea, built 5th c during Theodoric's reign. The mosaic work is stunning! The depiction of the saints around the room show them over various stages of life.
Oddly, this one is Jesus in full Roman armour.
OK, good point to stop. Part 2 in a bit!
