Parma Part Due

We stopped for lunch at a little neighborhood spot off the beaten path for tongue sandwich (me) and pasta & garbanzo beans for Holly. We had a great Malvasia too that we considered orange wine, but our server said not in Italy bc it requires longer skin contact to be considered orange (some wines as long as 11 months, for any wine nerds reading).

After lunch we went to the Parma Duomo and Baptistry.

Duomo first:

Even though we were a little "Jesus & Mary-ed out" some other places we'd wanted to visit closed early so we stopped in here. It was pretty grand. There wasn't one wall inside this cathedral that didn't have a fresco, top to bottom.

There was a cool 3d looking fresco in the dome by Correggio that was controversial back in the day - Causing him to leave town in a huff bc the locals claimed it looked like a bunch of frog legs (sounds delicious).

Baptistry:
Right next door was this octagon shaped building that was pretty cool.

Parma's pride and joy, it was built in approx 1300 and was a transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. The walls were lined with a combination of religious stories and statues representing the months of the year.

For dinner I booked a table at a Michelin restaurant, Osteria del 36, but they might as well have named it We Hate Tourists. Everyone Italian was seated in the nice front rooom; everyone else got stuck in the blazing hot back room. The food was mostly over thought or poorly executed (same with the tables around us). So if you're ever in Parma and looking for a shite meal, be sure to drop in!

  1. But the important question is - did you have Parmesan in Parma - or did you find the Parmesan Cheese Trail?

  2. Don't think I overlooked the women with the stripped dress, blue tights, crochet sweater & black belt - who is now my new style icon! Good find.
